A 29-year-old man named Enzo Conticello, also known as Hakim Boudjenoune, has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison for stealing a handbag containing a rare Fabergé egg and watch worth over £2 million. The theft occurred on November 7, 2024, at the Dog and Duck pub in Soho, where the victim, Rosie Dawson, had placed her Givenchy handbag on the ground while in the smoking area. In addition to the Fabergé items, the bag held a laptop, bank cards, cash, and other personal belongings. Conticello was apprehended shortly after the crime while attempting to use the stolen bank cards. He pleaded guilty to theft and fraud charges, stating that he intended to sell the items for drug money. Authorities are still working to recover the stolen Fabergé egg and watch.
Why It Matters
The theft of the Fabergé egg and watch highlights the ongoing issue of high-value thefts in urban areas, particularly as luxury items become targets for opportunistic criminals. Fabergé items are exceedingly rare, and the limited edition nature of these collectibles makes them especially valuable. In 2024, similar items were auctioned for prices as high as $2.8 million, indicating a robust market for high-end collectibles. This case also underscores the impact of addiction on criminal behavior, as Conticello’s actions were driven by his struggle with drug dependency following job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.
