What You Need to Know
• The World Health Organization warns that the Ebola virus outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo could be severe.
• By July 21, 2023, over 2,500 Ebola cases and 1,000 deaths had been reported in the DRC.
• Health workers face significant challenges, including a shortage of personal protective equipment and community distrust.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a grave warning regarding the Ebola virus outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), stating it could become one of the worst in history. The outbreak, which was officially declared on May 15, 2023, involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there are no approved treatments or vaccines. As of July 21, 2023, the DRC has recorded over 2,500 cases and 1,000 deaths, while Uganda has reported 20 cases and two deaths. Health workers are struggling with inadequate personal protective equipment, unpaid salaries, and hostility from communities that do not believe in the virus, complicating efforts to control the outbreak.

Why It Matters

This outbreak is significant as it highlights the ongoing challenges in managing Ebola in conflict-affected regions like eastern DRC, particularly in Ituri province. The previous largest Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016 resulted in over 11,000 deaths, underscoring the potential severity of the current situation. The WHO’s concerns are exacerbated by weakened disease surveillance due to cuts in global health aid, which have hindered timely detection and response efforts. The combination of community distrust and health worker safety issues further complicates the containment of the virus.
