What happened to Rick?

Following the announcement of Andrew Lincoln’s departure from “The Walking Dead” during its ninth season, many fans speculated about Rick’s fate. In his final episode, titled “What Comes After,” Rick finds himself in a dire situation, surrounded by walkers and facing grave injuries. As he reminisces about loved ones lost, it appears that these may be his final moments on Earth.

However, Rick is unexpectedly rescued by Jadis, who takes him to safety in a mysterious helicopter. Despite being severely injured, he is cared for and eventually drifts off to sleep, only to reappear in the series finale, six years later, living in a militarized city under the rule of the Civic Republic, still yearning to reunite with his family.

Why six years later?

Following Rick’s absence, a six-year time jump reveals an older Judith and the surprise introduction of another son, born to Michonne after Rick’s disappearance. The leap in time allows Michonne to grieve offscreen, while still holding onto hope of finding Rick someday.

Does she know where Rick is?

Before his apparent demise, Rick staged his own death using dynamite to escape the walkers, leading his loved ones to believe he perished in the explosion. Despite the acceptance of his death by most, Michonne discovers Rick’s boots and drawings at an abandoned naval base, fueling her belief that he is still alive.
