Joel MacManus is attempting to travel from the bottom to the top of New Zealand using only public transport, primarily trains, buses, and ferries. Starting in Stewart Island, he plans to reach Cape Reinga as quickly as possible to gain new insight into his home country’s public transport system. Despite the challenges of slow, expensive, and infrequent inter-city rail, he is determined to complete the journey, which includes multiple bus and train transfers, for a total cost of $1,052 and an estimated 150 hours of travel time.
