The Israel Defence Forces (idf) initiated an operation on April 1st, intended to remain discreet until soldiers secured strategic positions. Defence Minister Israel Katz announced the goal of the operation was to “smash and clean the area of terrorists” and to expand Israel’s security zones by capturing significant areas of Gaza. Despite the generals’ desire for secrecy, the politicians quickly publicized the operation’s objectives.
