What You Need to Know
• UNESCO reports that 113 countries with 6.1 billion people spend more on debt than education.
• In low-income countries, debt payments are nearly four times higher than education spending.
• Developing countries transferred $741 billion more to external creditors than they received in financing from 2022 to 2024.

New figures from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reveal that 113 countries, home to a total population of 6.1 billion, allocate more funds to servicing debt than to educating their citizens. In low-income nations, debt payments are almost four times greater than expenditures on education, with 18 heavily indebted countries spending at least five times more on debt than on education. The World Bank indicates that between 2022 and 2024, developing countries transferred $741 billion more to external creditors in principal and interest than they received in new financing, marking the largest net debt outflow in over 50 years. In 2024, low and middle-income countries are projected to pay a record $415 billion in interest, highlighting the financial strain these nations face in prioritizing debt over education.

Why It Matters

The financial dynamics affecting education funding are critical to understanding the broader implications for societal development. As governments prioritize debt payments over educational investments, the quality of education suffers, leading to overcrowded classrooms and teacher shortages. This trend reflects a systemic issue where poorer nations are perceived as recipients of aid, while substantial public wealth is transferred to creditors, undermining long-term growth and stability. The ongoing financial obligations hinder the ability of these countries to invest in their future workforce, ultimately impacting productivity and social resilience.
