The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has denied Tesla’s attempt to trademark “Robotaxi,” deeming it a generic term already in use by other companies, such as Amazon’s Zoox. The term is considered “merely descriptive” as it describes a category of self-driving services, which complicates Tesla’s efforts to establish its planned autonomous vehicle service. Tesla must now provide additional evidence to the USPTO to support its trademark application, while also exploring other names like “Robobus” and “Cybercab” for its self-driving offerings introduced at the October 2024 event “We, Robot.”
