Telecommunications Ombudsman Requests Expanded Powers for Digital Disputes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) is urging the Federal Government to expand its powers to encompass all digital and social media disputes, following over 1,500 complaints received in 32 months. Of these complaints, 71% were directed at major tech companies like Google and Apple, primarily concerning account access and fee disputes. Ombudsman Cynthia Gebert highlighted the need for an external body to assist consumers facing issues with digital platforms, especially with upcoming regulations banning social media accounts for those under 16. She emphasized that enhanced consumer protections are necessary to restore trust in the digital economy and support government reforms.
