The New York Giants have released veteran defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches, who has signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nunez-Roches previously played for the Buccaneers from 2018 to 2022, contributing to their Super Bowl LV victory. The 32-year-old defensive end, who also has experience playing inside, spent the last three seasons with the Giants after joining them on a three-year, $12 million deal. In his final season with New York, he played nine games, recording 23 tackles and three sacks before being placed on injured reserve due to ankle and toe injuries. Over his career, Nunez-Roches has appeared in 142 games with 62 starts, accumulating a total of 233 tackles and nine sacks, leaving the Giants in search of veteran leadership on their defensive line.

Why It Matters

Nunez-Roches’ departure from the Giants highlights the team’s ongoing efforts to reshape their defensive front as they prepare for the 2026 season. His previous experience with the Buccaneers, including a role in their championship run, underscores the value of seasoned players in a competitive league. The Giants will need to fill the gap left by Nunez-Roches to maintain depth and versatility in their defensive line. Historically, teams with strong defensive lines have a better chance of succeeding in the league, making the search for reliable players critical for the Giants’ future performance.
