Authorities have shuttered drug factories that were cash pipeline for former ruler Bashar al-Assad, UN report.
Syria’s new government has dismantled a network of Captagon production facilities, previously a lucrative source of revenue for former leader Bashar al-Assad, according to a UN report. Since al-Assad’s ouster, 15 laboratories and 13 storage sites have been closed, impacting the region’s drug market. Despite these efforts, large stockpiles of Captagon remain, and demand may shift to other substances like methamphetamine. The UN emphasizes that political will and international cooperation were crucial in destabilizing this complex drug market.
