Synology’s New Hard Drive Restrictions
Synology plans to implement restrictions on third-party hard drives in its future NAS devices starting with Plus Series models released in 2025, limiting full feature access to only Synology-branded and certified drives. This change will not affect existing NAS owners or devices released in 2024 and earlier, but it may hinder typical use cases for new customers, such as storage pooling and drive lifespan analysis. The company cites improved reliability and reduced compatibility issues as reasons for these restrictions, which may limit cost-saving options for users.
