In 2023, the beloved Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland was illegally chopped down, sparking outrage. In response, the National Trust has cultivated 49 saplings from the felled tree, now being planted across the UK as part of a ‘Tree of Hope’ initiative. This project aims to inspire communities and commemorate the iconic tree’s legacy. The first saplings are being planted at various symbolic locations, including hospitals and schools, with plans for further distributions in 2026.
