Auckland and Northland under heavy rain warnings with possible thunderstorms

Heavy rain is impacting northern New Zealand, particularly in Northland, where a 24-hour deluge is expected to bring up to 150mm of rainfall. Northern Auckland is also bracing for significant downpours, with forecasts predicting up to 120mm of rain from now until 3pm. An orange heavy rain warning has been issued for eastern Northland south of Kawakawa, alerting residents to intense rainfall rates of up to 40mm per hour, with potential for thunderstorms, flooding, and rapidly rising rivers. Furthermore, eastern Auckland, north of Whangaparāoa, is under a similar warning lasting for 16 hours and expected to end by mid-afternoon.

Why It Matters

Such severe weather events are critical as they can lead to flooding and infrastructure damage, affecting communities and local economies. Northland and Auckland have previously experienced significant weather-related disruptions, including flooding that has caused road closures and power outages. The region’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall is heightened during certain seasons, making weather warnings essential for public safety. Historical data indicates that increased rainfall intensity can be linked to broader climate change trends, further underscoring the importance of preparedness in facing extreme weather events.
