Cargo vessel steered towards Somalia by suspected pirates

Pirates have reportedly hijacked a cargo vessel off the coast of Somalia, marking the second attack in less than a week. The Sward, carrying cement from Egypt to Kenya, was taken over by armed men and is heading towards the Somali coastline. The Strait of Hormuz blockage due to the US-Israeli war on Iran has already caused disruptions in maritime routes, forcing ships to take longer journeys to deliver goods.

Why It Matters

Pirate activity off the coast of Somalia has been increasing since late 2023, causing concerns for maritime security in the region. The hijacking of the Sward adds to the challenges faced by shipping companies already dealing with the blockage of the vital Strait of Hormuz. The situation highlights the ongoing threats to global trade and the need for enhanced security measures to protect commercial vessels in these high-risk areas.
