Supreme Court justices urge Congress to increase security funding

Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett testified before a House subcommittee on the need for increased funding to bolster their security amid rising threats. The Court is requesting over $228 million for the next fiscal year, which includes $14.6 million specifically for enhancing security protection, allowing for six additional agents per justice. Kagan noted that threats have become more serious, with the Supreme Court Police anticipating a 38% increase in threats for 2026. This follows a 57% rise in significant security incidents reported for federal judges in the previous fiscal year. Barrett recounted personal security incidents, including a false alarm at her home and receiving a bulletproof vest, illustrating the high threat level faced by the justices.

Why It Matters

The increased funding request highlights the growing concerns over the safety of Supreme Court justices and federal judges, particularly in the wake of recent high-profile incidents. The Supreme Court has experienced a surge in threats since the 2022 leak of a draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, which prompted protests and heightened scrutiny on justices’ personal safety. Data shows a substantial rise in security incidents and threats against judges, underscoring a troubling trend that has implications for the judicial system’s integrity and the ability of justices to perform their duties without fear. The ongoing threats reflect broader issues related to political polarization and the safety of public officials in the United States.
