One type of supernova, known as a core-collapse supernova, occurs when a massive star, around eight times heavier than our sun, exhausts its fuel. Beginning with hydrogen, the lightest element on the periodic table, the star’s core undergoes fusion to create progressively heavier elements. This fusion process generates heat until the star’s core is composed of iron.
