The UK government is proposing to extend the sugar tax on fizzy drinks to include milkshakes and similar dairy and non-dairy beverages, with consultations open until July 21. Chancellor Rachel Reeves indicated a desire to broaden the soft drinks industry levy (SDIL) following evidence that young people obtain minimal calcium from these drinks and to encourage manufacturers to reduce sugar content. Critics, including the Institute of Economic Affairs, argue the tax has failed and express concern over increased consumer costs, urging for its repeal instead of expansion.
