With the Trump administration restarting student loan collections, Americans who are behind on payments may face wage garnishment and other severe financial repercussions. Over 43 million borrowers owe more than $1.6 trillion in student debt, with over 5 million in default and an estimated 10 million potentially defaulting soon. Borrowers can have up to 15% of their disposable income garnished, and while notices about wage garnishment are forthcoming, many may not understand their rights to contest the default or the garnishment based on financial hardship.
