US Oil Reserve Reaches 44-Year Low Amid Iran War and Global Energy Shortage

What You Need to Know
• The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to 286.6 million barrels, its lowest level since 1982.
• The reserve decreased by over 3 million barrels during the week ending August 28, 2023.
• U.S. gasoline prices have surpassed $4 per gallon due to significant global oil supply disruptions.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm announced that the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has reached its lowest level since 1982, currently holding 286.6 million barrels of oil. This represents about 40% of the reserve’s total capacity, which can hold up to 714 million barrels. The decrease of more than 3 million barrels during the week ending August 28, 2023, is attributed to ongoing emergency oil drawdowns amid a global energy shortage. As a result of the largest oil supply disruption on record, U.S. gasoline prices have surged above $4 per gallon, contributing to inflation and impacting the upcoming midterm elections in November 2023. Global oil prices recently exceeded $92 per barrel following reports of an oil tanker being struck off the coast of Oman.

Why It Matters

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was established in response to the Arab Oil Embargo in the early 1970s to safeguard against sudden oil supply shortages. The reserve is crucial for stabilizing oil markets, especially during geopolitical tensions, such as the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The U.S. has released approximately 128 million barrels from the reserve since the onset of the Iran war, with plans to release a total of 172 million barrels as part of a commitment by the International Energy Agency. This situation underscores the importance of the reserve in managing domestic fuel prices and addressing inflationary pressures on the economy.
