There are currently 15 states reporting cyclosporiasis cases linked to a recall of iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, as confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recent updates indicate that Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Carolina have joined the list of affected states. The outbreak has resulted in 6,358 reported illnesses, with expectations for this number to rise due to the lag in identifying infections. Additionally, two deaths have been reported in Michigan, with both individuals having significant underlying health conditions. In response, Taylor Farms has issued a voluntary recall of all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, and consumers are advised to dispose of or return any affected products. Taco Bell has ceased using lettuce from Taylor Farms in its restaurants.

Why It Matters

This outbreak highlights the ongoing public health risk posed by foodborne illnesses, particularly those linked to fresh produce. Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, can lead to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and is known for its association with contaminated fruits and vegetables. Historically, similar outbreaks have prompted recalls and led to increased scrutiny of food safety practices in the agricultural supply chain. The CDC has reported over 10,468 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis nationwide, underscoring the importance of rapid identification and response to outbreaks to prevent further spread.
