Two New Jersey Water Systems Targeted in Cyberattacks

Two New Jersey municipal water systems experienced cyberattacks last week, likely attributed to Iran, according to state officials. The unnamed utilities faced temporary disruptions as automated systems were compromised, leading to a shift to manual operations. Despite these challenges, officials confirmed there was no interruption to water service and that enhanced security measures had been implemented. The New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) is collaborating with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to investigate the incidents, which exploited vulnerable internet-connected control systems. Authorities are also examining the possibility of other state actors mimicking Iran’s tactics. Similar cyberattacks have targeted water and wastewater utilities across multiple states, leading to heightened scrutiny and security measures nationwide.

Why It Matters

Cybersecurity in critical infrastructure, such as water utilities, is increasingly under threat, as demonstrated by recent hacks affecting systems in at least a dozen states. These incidents expose vulnerabilities in commonly used software, prompting a nationwide response to secure water services. Historical instances of cyberattacks on utility systems underscore the potential risks to public health and safety, emphasizing the importance of robust security measures. As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, the protection of essential services like drinking water is paramount for national security and public trust.
