Cyclospora cases in the UK increase due to travel to Mexico

Health officials in the U.K. are observing a significant increase in cyclosporiasis cases among travelers returning from Mexico, with 67 cases reported between April 30 and July 15. This figure is notable when compared to an annual average of 93 cases from 2022 to 2025. The outbreak is also affecting the United States, where at least nine states are reporting cases linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico and served at Taco Bell restaurants. This outbreak has resulted in two fatalities in Michigan, although deaths from cyclosporiasis are uncommon. Taylor Farms, the supplier of the contaminated lettuce, has initiated a voluntary recall. Investigations are ongoing, particularly concerning the sources of contamination in Mexico, with many affected individuals having traveled to popular regions like Cancún and Riviera Maya.

Why It Matters

The rise in cyclosporiasis cases highlights ongoing public health challenges related to foodborne illnesses. Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, is often linked to contaminated food and water, particularly in tropical regions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports over 18,000 cases across 45 states in the U.S., with a significant number still under investigation. Previous outbreaks have shown how produce can become contaminated at various points, from farms to processing facilities, emphasizing the need for robust food safety measures and surveillance to prevent further incidents.
