What You Need to Know
• Federal health officials are investigating five clusters of cyclosporiasis cases since May 2023.
• The largest cluster is linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell in five states.
• Michigan reports 6,148 cases, an increase of over 1,000 cases since Friday, according to MDHHS.

Federal health officials, including Acting Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Kyle Diamantas, announced on Monday that they are investigating five clusters of cyclosporiasis cases that began in May 2023. Three of these clusters are now considered resolved, while the largest cluster, associated with shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, has seen recent cases. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 6,148 cases, marking an increase of more than 1,000 cases since the previous Friday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 1,644 infections linked to this outbreak and advised against consuming shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell in the affected states.

Why It Matters

This investigation highlights ongoing public health concerns related to foodborne illnesses in the United States. Cyclosporiasis, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, can lead to significant illness, and many cases go unreported as individuals often recover without medical intervention. The outbreak’s connection to Taco Bell and the widespread distribution of the affected lettuce raises questions about food safety practices and the potential for similar outbreaks in the future. The situation underscores the importance of monitoring food sources and ensuring public awareness to prevent further infections.
