Democrats call for closure of Dilley immigration detention center

Rep. Joaquin Castro, along with over 110 Democratic lawmakers, has urged Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin to close the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas. This facility, the only family detention center in the U.S., was temporarily closed during the Biden administration but reopened last year amid ongoing immigration enforcement. In a letter obtained by ABC News, the lawmakers criticized the conditions at Dilley, describing it as a “trailer prison” that detains families with children who have not been charged with any crime. They highlighted reports of unsanitary conditions, including contaminated food and inadequate medical care, which they claim has led to severe mental health issues among detained children. The letter also alleges that many families are held beyond the 20-day limit set by the Flores Settlement Agreement, with some children reportedly detained for over 90 days.

Why It Matters

The Dilley facility’s operations continue to spark controversy amid broader debates over immigration policy and the treatment of migrants in U.S. detention centers. The Flores Settlement Agreement, established in the 1990s, was designed to protect the rights of detained minors, yet reports suggest that compliance is lacking. The ongoing scrutiny of conditions at Dilley raises questions about the U.S. government’s commitment to humane treatment of migrant families. Furthermore, the criticism from lawmakers and advocates reflects a growing concern about the implications of detention practices on the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, especially children.
