Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, has been charged in federal court for fatally shooting a National Guard member and seriously wounding another in Washington, D.C. He faces firearm offenses and potential consideration for the death penalty. Lakanwal allegedly obtained a stolen revolver for “personal protection” as a rideshare driver, drove cross-country to D.C., and committed the attack. The suspect, who had worked with the CIA in Afghanistan, applied for asylum in the U.S. in 2021 and was granted it in April.
