A former physics graduate student at Brown University, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, is believed to be behind a deadly mass shooting at the school and the fatal shooting of a former classmate. Neves Valente, a brilliant but at times angry man, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was remembered as a top student at Lisbon’s Instituto Superior Técnico and had a strained relationship with his classmates at Brown due to frustrations with academic rigor and life in the U.S. Neves Valente withdrew from Brown in 2003, following a leave of absence in 2001.
