Judge Blocks National Guard Deployment in Memphis

A Tennessee judge has issued a temporary injunction blocking the deployment of the National Guard in Memphis, stating that Governor Bill Lee overstepped his authority. Chancellor Patricia Head Moskal emphasized that the governor’s powers as commander-in-chief are not unlimited and allowed a five-day period for an appeal. The ruling comes after a lawsuit from elected officials who contended that the governor can only deploy the Guard in response to civil unrest. Despite the injunction, other federal task force operations, including those by the FBI and DEA, will continue in the city.
