How humpback whales are playfully communicating with humans, according to scientists

Researchers from the SETI Institute suggest that humpback whales may be playfully communicating with humans by producing bubble rings during friendly interactions, as detailed in a recent study published in Marine Mammal Science. This behavior, previously associated with corraling prey or mating displays, indicates a level of curiosity and social interaction, contributing to the understanding of non-human intelligence and its implications for extraterrestrial life search. The study analyzed 12 episodes of bubble ring production by 11 whales, revealing a deliberate attempt to engage with humans, in line with the whales’ known inquisitive nature.
