In the ongoing manhunt for 10 inmates who escaped a New Orleans jail, facial recognition cameras operated by Project N.O.L.A. have aided in recapturing one fugitive while raising constitutional concerns among critics, including civil rights organizations and some politicians. Despite New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick’s decision to halt automated alerts from the facial recognition system, the technology has been utilized to track escapees in public areas. The ACLU and bipartisan congressional figures have called for an indefinite halt to such surveillance, highlighting privacy issues amidst the ongoing search for the remaining fugitives.
