State Department to introduce new passport design featuring Trump’s portrait

The State Department is set to unveil a limited-edition redesign of the American passport to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary in July. This new design will include a portrait of President Trump alongside his signature on the interior visa pages, overlaid on text from the Declaration of Independence. Unlike traditional passport designs that typically showcase historical scenes and cultural symbols, this redesign marks a significant shift in artistic direction. The redesigned passport will be the default option at the Washington Passport Agency and will not carry any additional fees. However, other passport-issuing locations will continue to offer the existing passport design. While initial reports suggested that 25,000 copies would be issued, a State Department official has disputed that number without providing a specific figure.

Why It Matters

This redesign occurs during a milestone year for the United States, which marks 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The introduction of a passport featuring a sitting president’s likeness is unprecedented and reflects a broader trend of associating Trump’s name and image with various public institutions and initiatives. The current passport, known as the “Next Generation” passport, emphasizes American landscapes and historical events, showcasing the evolution of U.S. passport design. Additionally, the U.S. Mint’s plans to issue a commemorative coin featuring Trump further highlight the administration’s efforts to commemorate this anniversary with a distinct focus on the current president’s legacy.
