The State has appealed a High Court decision finding its failure to provide for homeless asylum seekers breaches their fundamental rights, with IHREC confirming the appeal lodged with the Court of Appeal. The number of unaccommodated applicants has risen to 2,987, leading IHREC to describe the situation as a “humanitarian emergency” as many face an Irish winter without shelter. While the State increased weekly expenses payments and arranged for food and hygiene facilities, IHREC argued the allowance remains insufficient, prompting the appeal.
