American Company Aims to Compete with China’s Rare Earth Element Industry

President Trump recently postponed a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, primarily due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. When the two leaders eventually meet, a significant topic of discussion will be rare earth elements, as China currently dominates the market for these critical materials, which are essential for modern technology, including smartphones, electric vehicles, and military equipment. An American company, co-owned by taxpayers, is now addressing this issue by mining and processing rare earth elements at Mountain Pass, California—the only operational rare earth mine in the U.S. This mine represents a crucial front in the U.S.-China trade war, as the U.S. seeks to secure its supply chains for these strategic metals that are vital for national defense and everyday technology.

Why It Matters

China controls approximately 80% of the global supply of rare earth elements, which are essential for various industries, including aerospace and telecommunications. The U.S. military relies heavily on these materials, with advanced fighter jets like the F-35 containing significant amounts of rare earths. The U.S. government’s focus on securing rare earth supply chains is a response to China’s potential to leverage its monopoly for geopolitical advantages. The Mountain Pass mine, operational since the late 1940s, highlights efforts to reduce reliance on foreign sources and bolster domestic production of these critical minerals.
