Starlink Lowers Satellite Orbits to Reduce Collision Risk
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Starlink plans to lower the orbits of approximately 4,400 satellites from around 550 km to 480 km to enhance safety and reduce collision risks, according to engineering VP Michael Nicolls. This reconfiguration aims to place satellites in less congested areas and facilitate quicker deorbiting during incidents, especially as the solar minimum approaches in the early 2030s. Nicolls noted that this change could significantly decrease the ballistic decay time of satellites. The announcement follows recent incidents involving satellite anomalies and uncoordinated maneuvers by other operators.
