Stansted Airport introduces £28 charge for extended drop-off times

Stansted Airport has increased its drop-off fee to £10, effective immediately, joining Gatwick in implementing a charge during the busy Easter holiday period. The cost for a 15-minute stay has risen by £3 from the previous fee of £7, while longer visits now incur a charge of £28. This change follows City Airport’s introduction of a drop-off charge earlier this year, marking a trend among London airports. The fee hike has drawn criticism from travelers, with some expressing disbelief that the drop-off cost could rival the price of budget flights. Alternatives for free drop-offs do exist, such as using the mid-stay car park with a complimentary shuttle service to the terminal.

Why It Matters

The rise in drop-off fees at Stansted and Gatwick reflects a wider trend among UK airports aimed at encouraging the use of public transport and reducing congestion. Since 2012, Stansted has employed drop-off charges to promote alternative transportation methods, aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The introduction of financial penalties for short-term parking could impact passenger behavior and airport accessibility, especially during peak travel times. This situation highlights the growing pressure on airports to balance operational revenue with the need for efficient passenger flow and environmental considerations.
