The U.S. Olympic marathon trials for the 2028 Olympics will take place in St. Louis on March 25, 2028, where three men and three women will secure their spots on Team USA. This event, selected over Phoenix, marks the first qualification event for the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles. The marathon course will start at Washington University’s Francis Olympic Field and end at Energizer Park, featuring multiple loops through downtown. USA Track & Field has adjusted the qualifying time for men from 2:18:00 to 2:16:00, while the women’s standard remains at 2:37:00. Currently, 134 men and 139 women have already qualified for the trials, showcasing a competitive landscape in U.S. marathon running, highlighted by recent record-breaking performances.

Why It Matters

St. Louis has a historical connection to the Olympics, having hosted the 1904 Games, and this event reinforces that legacy. The marathon trials are significant as they represent a crucial step for athletes aiming to compete in the Olympics, where the U.S. has struggled in recent years. The last Olympic gold medal won by an American man in the marathon was in 1972, while the last woman achieved this in 1984. The increase in marathon participation and performance standards reflects a growing trend in athletics, influencing how athletes prepare for international competitions and highlighting the importance of these trials in shaping the future of U.S. distance running.
