Spain’s Canary Islands prepare for hantavirus outbreak from cruise ship

A hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has led to plans for the evacuation of 140 passengers and crew in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Eight individuals have fallen ill, and three have died since the outbreak was detected on May 2. Passengers will be taken to a secure area upon arrival, with the World Health Organization assisting in the evacuation. Health authorities are tracking contacts of those who disembarked before the outbreak was identified.
