SpaceX rocket booster on collision course with moon, expected to create 16-foot crater

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster, weighing 8,800 pounds, is projected to collide with the moon early Wednesday at approximately 2:35 a.m. Eastern time. The booster, which separated from two lunar landers launched in January 2025, has been in orbit since its mission. While one lander successfully touched down, the other crashed upon landing. The rocket, measuring 45 feet long and 12 feet wide, will hit the lunar surface at a speed of 5,400 mph, generating an impact comparable to 2.8 tons of TNT and creating a crater between 65 and 100 feet in diameter. Observers will not be able to witness the impact directly due to its rapid nature and location on the moon’s lit side, but before and after images will be captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in the following weeks.
