South Korea ends its longest short-selling ban in history after systemic reforms

South Korea lifted its longest short-selling ban on Monday, implemented in November 2023 after global investment bank breaches. The ban was lifted for all 2,700 stocks on the Korea Exchange, with stricter penalties and measures to crack down on illegal transactions and protect retail investors. Unlike previous bans, the 2023 measure aimed at systemic reforms and detection of naked short selling, with fines raised and enforcement measures strengthened to ensure compliance.
