South Carolina executes third inmate by firing squad in 2023

A South Carolina triple murderer, Stephen Bryant, was executed by firing squad on Friday at the Broad River Correctional Institution. The 44-year-old admitted to killing Willard “TJ” Tietjen and two other men in October 2004, employing brutal methods including shooting and burning Tietjen’s eyes with cigarettes. Bryant, who chose firing squad over other execution methods, had a final meal of seafood stir-fry and cake. His execution marked the third by firing squad in South Carolina this year, following a 13-year hiatus in executions.
