The South African government has formed a team of mine rescue experts to devise a plan to bring illegal miners trapped under a disused gold mine to the surface, taking a more conciliatory approach after initial reluctance to help. Police estimate between 350 and 400 miners may be underground, with concerns about their safety and potential armament. Authorities have recovered firearms, cash, and diamonds from illegal miners, as efforts continue to rescue those still trapped underground.
