Mitchell Robinson identified as Lakers’ backup center option

The Los Angeles Lakers focused on upgrading their center position this summer after experiencing inconsistency with Deandre Ayton last season. On July 1, they acquired Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade deal that involved two first-round picks and two pick swaps. The Lakers also signed Sandro Mamukelashvili and Kevon Looney while trading Ayton to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks and guard Jaden Hardy. Had they not secured Kessler, the Lakers were considering signing free agent Mitchell Robinson, who recently joined the Boston Celtics on a three-year, $47.4 million contract. Kessler, a top rim protector and rebounder, will now lead the Lakers’ frontcourt, supported by Looney as the backup center.

Why It Matters

The Lakers’ decision to prioritize acquiring a top-tier center reflects their strategic need to strengthen their roster after a challenging season. Kessler’s addition marks a significant shift in the team’s dynamics, moving away from Ayton’s inconsistent performance. Historically, solid center play has been crucial for championship-contending teams, and Kessler’s proven defensive skills could enhance the Lakers’ chances in future playoff scenarios. The move away from pursuing Robinson indicates a focus on long-term success and stability at the center position, which has been a critical area of need for the franchise.
