Somalia referee denied entry to US over World Cup officiating decision

Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan stated that being denied entry to the United States for the World Cup was “fate” and encouraged fellow Somalis to remain hopeful. Artan, named Africa’s referee of the year in 2025, was set to be the first Somali to officiate at the World Cup but was turned back by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) due to alleged links to “suspected members of terror organizations.” He expressed gratitude for FIFA’s support and emphasized his commitment to Somalia, urging youth not to lose hope in their country. The US immigration policies have previously included bans affecting citizens from multiple countries, including Somalia, and a FIFA spokesperson confirmed that Artan would miss the opportunity to officiate at the tournament, which begins on Thursday.

Why It Matters

Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s situation highlights the impact of stringent immigration policies implemented during the Trump administration, which led to a travel ban affecting citizens from 12 countries, including Somalia. This incident raises concerns about the representation of Somali individuals in international sports and the broader implications for athletes from regions facing similar challenges. Historically, immigration bans have not only affected individuals but have also hindered opportunities for cultural exchange and athletic participation on a global stage, reinforcing barriers rather than fostering inclusivity in sports.
