What You Need to Know
• Somalia has reported a 32 percent increase in children treated for severe malnutrition in 2026.
• UNICEF estimates nearly 1.9 million children in Somalia will be malnourished this year.
• Funding for addressing acute malnutrition in Somalia has dropped by over 80 percent this year.

The United Nations has warned that life-threatening malnutrition among children is rising in Somalia, where over 200 health and nutrition facilities have closed due to cuts in international aid. In the first half of 2026, UNICEF reported a 32 percent increase in the number of children admitted for severe acute malnutrition and complications. Approximately 1.9 million children are expected to suffer from malnutrition this year. UNICEF spokesman James Elder stated that aid cuts are limiting access to healthcare and nutrition services, while a severe drought has displaced about 500,000 people and exacerbated food shortages affecting one-third of Somalia’s 19 million population. Funding for malnutrition interventions has plummeted by more than 80 percent, with Somalia excluded from a $2 billion global humanitarian aid pledge due to allegations of aid diversion and corruption.

Why It Matters

The situation in Somalia is critical, with severe drought conditions and significant funding cuts impacting healthcare and nutrition services. The country faces a humanitarian crisis with millions at risk of malnutrition, particularly among children. Historical patterns of aid dependency and recent political issues have compounded the challenges, making it difficult for organizations like UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders to provide necessary support. The ongoing drought and rising costs of essential goods further threaten the livelihoods of millions, highlighting the urgent need for international assistance.
