Soldiers from El Salvador join U.N.-backed mission in Haiti to combat gang violence

A military contingent from El Salvador has arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to support a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police in combating gangs responsible for the deaths of thousands last year. The Salvadorean soldiers will provide crucial air support for medical evacuations, joining the more than 600 Kenyan police officers already deployed. Gang violence continues to plague the capital, with recent attacks leaving at least 40 dead in an upscale community and prompting calls for increased funding and personnel to strengthen the mission into a U.N.-peacekeeping operation.
