SNK and Plaion Replai have announced the Neo Geo AES+, a modern remake of the classic Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System from the 1990s. This updated console features HDMI compatibility for up to 1080p resolution, DIP switches for language selection and display mode changes, and a memory card system to save high scores. While it retains compatibility with original AV outputs for CRT displays, the Neo Geo AES+ also introduces a low-power mode. Preorders are available for two versions: a 35th anniversary edition priced at $349.99, which includes an Arcade Stick, a limited-edition Metal Slug cartridge, and a memory card, and a standard edition for $249.99 that comes with just the Arcade Stick. The Neo Geo AES+ is set to ship on November 12, alongside the release of 10 modernized game cartridges.
Why It Matters
The Neo Geo AES+ represents a significant revival of a high-end gaming console that originally launched at $649.99, making it a notable piece of gaming history. The original Neo Geo was recognized for its arcade-quality games but had limited accessibility due to its high price. The introduction of modern features, such as HDMI support and memory card functionality, allows a new generation of gamers to experience classic titles. By offering compatibility with original cartridges, the Neo Geo AES+ appeals to both nostalgic players and modern audiences, bridging the gap between retro gaming and contemporary technology.
