Most single bus fares capped at £2 starting in January

Single bus fares across England will be capped at £2 starting January 2024, as announced by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. This decision lowers the previous national cap of £3, which was implemented under former Chancellor Rachel Reeves in 2024. Burnham, who previously established a £2 cap in Greater Manchester during his tenure as mayor, emphasized the importance of affordable transport for all citizens. The initiative will cost an estimated £500 million and is funded through reallocations within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero budget, along with savings from international climate finance investments. The cap will not apply to London, and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that this measure will simplify and reduce costs for everyday travel.

Why It Matters

The decision to cap bus fares is part of a broader commitment to address the cost of living crisis impacting millions across the UK. Historically, transportation costs have been a significant burden for many families, particularly in regions where public transport is a primary means of travel. This measure aligns with ongoing efforts by local governments to control fares and improve accessibility, as seen in areas like Greater Manchester and the North East, where local caps are already in place. The £2 cap also marks a reversal from the previous increase, highlighting the political shift in prioritizing affordability in public transport under the new Labour leadership.
