SINGAPORE: A People’s Action Party (PAP) team helmed by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Gan Kim Yong won the newly formed Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) with 55.17% of the vote in the General Election, defeating the Workers’ Party (WP) who secured 44.83%. The PAP team garnered 63,589 votes on May 3, 2025, with Gan thanking residents for their support and pledging to serve them. Political analyst Chong Ja Ian noted that the PAP’s victory was influenced by Gan’s addition to the team and residents’ unfamiliarity with the WP.

“Residents of Punggol, I must thank you for your support and the mandate that you’ve given us, for my team and I to serve you for the next five years,” said Mr Gan in a speech at Bedok Stadium. “We will do our best to serve you and to make Punggol a better place and a better home.” In a speech, Mr Singh emphasized the need for the PAP to be the voice of Singaporeans, urging them not to return to “business as usual.”

Political analyst Chong Ja Ian noted multiple factors contributing to the PAP’s victory, including Mr Gan’s addition and the WP team’s relative newness in the area. He commented that the WP’s performance demonstrated their growing momentum and recognition among voters. The PAP previously secured 64.16% of the vote in the 2020 elections, with the Punggol GRC now comprising areas from defunct constituencies.
