Fire at Viva Energy Victoria Refinery

Firefighters are responding to a significant fire at the Viva Energy Group’s Geelong refinery in Victoria, which was reported around 11 PM local time on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that the fire is not yet under control, but all staff members have been accounted for. Multiple calls regarding explosions and flames prompted the emergency response at the refinery located in Corio. The facility is capable of processing up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day and is one of only two refineries left in Australia, employing over 1,100 people and supplying more than 50% of Victoria’s fuel and 10% of Australia’s fuel. Viva Energy Group has not yet provided a comment on the situation.

Why It Matters

The Geelong refinery plays a crucial role in Australia’s fuel supply chain, especially amid ongoing concerns regarding fuel security linked to geopolitical tensions, such as the recent conflicts involving Iran and the U.S. and Israel. In response to rising fuel costs exacerbated by these tensions, the Australian government has taken measures to alleviate the financial burden on households, including cutting fuel excise and eliminating heavy road user charges for a limited time. The fire at the refinery not only represents a potential disruption to fuel supplies in Victoria but may also impact national fuel availability, further complicating Australia’s energy security landscape.
