A pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, his iconic films like Ankur and Manthan reshaped Indian filmmaking in the 1970s and 1980s. Benegal’s contributions were honored with Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991, leaving behind a diverse body of work that continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences worldwide.
