The wreck of a steam tugboat known as the Slovenian, dating back to 1913, has emerged from the Sava River in Serbia due to severe drought conditions affecting Europe. This historic vessel, which has been dubbed “Sava’s Titanic” by local media, was previously submerged but is now more visible than ever. Historian Andrija Popovic noted that it has sparked renewed interest among locals, as it hasn’t been seen for several years. The Slovenian, originally built in Budapest, served various roles during both World Wars before sinking in 1945 after hitting a mine. The phenomenon of low water levels has also uncovered other historical artifacts, including warships and ancient bones, across Europe’s waterways, highlighting the impact of climate change on historical preservation.

Why It Matters

The ongoing drought in Europe has led to historically low water levels in major rivers like the Danube and Sava, affecting trade, agriculture, and power supply. This environmental crisis has revealed significant historical relics, including sunken Nazi warships and ancient mammoth bones, illustrating the broader impacts of climate change on both natural and human history. The Slovenian’s reemergence serves as a reminder of the region’s complex history during the World Wars, as well as the pressing issues surrounding climate change and its effects on cultural heritage.
